Not sure which Android step comes first?
Join the tester group first, then opt in on Google Play. Google Play will not show you the test build until your account is in the group, so doing it the other way around looks like a dead end.
If the store still shows the public listing after you join, give it a few minutes and reload, then check you are signed in with the same Google account you used for the group.
